Terms and privacy

Short version: DabJokes has no accounts and never asks who you are. We use Google Analytics to count visits, and one day we may show ads from Google AdSense to help pay for the site. Both are explained below, along with how to opt out.
Using the site
DabJokes is free to use for fun. The jokes are provided as they are; if one doesn't land, rate it 😐 Meh and we'll take the hint. You're welcome to share jokes and links. Please don't scrape the site in bulk or try to rig the votes.
What stays in your browser
A few settings are saved in your browser's local storage, on your device only. We never receive them:
- which jokes you've voted on, and your choice;
- your "laughed today" streak;
- your theme (light or dark) and, if offered, the edgy-jokes setting.
Clearing your browser's site data removes them. If you install DabJokes as an app, a copy of the jokes is cached on your device so it works offline.
Votes
When you rate a joke, your browser sends the joke's ID and your choice. We add it to that joke's running totals of 😂, 🙄 and 😐. To allow one vote per joke per day, we also store a one-way, salted hash of your IP address combined with the joke and the date. We never store your IP address itself, the hash can't be turned back into it, and these hashes are deleted after about two days.
Analytics
We use Google Analytics, a service from Google, to understand how the site is used: how many people visit, which pages and jokes they view, how they found us, and roughly where from (country or city, worked out from your IP address). It also tells us the type of device and browser, so we can make sure the site works on them.
To tell visits apart, Google Analytics sets cookies (named _ga and _ga_ followed by an ID) in your browser and sends this information to Google. We only see totals and trends, never anything that identifies you, and we don't send Google your name, email or anything else personal. Your votes and settings aren't linked to it.
You can opt out by blocking or clearing cookies for this site, or with Google's Analytics opt-out browser add-on. Google explains how it uses this information in How Google uses information from sites or apps that use its services.
Advertising
DabJokes doesn't show ads today. In future we may use Google AdSense to show ads alongside the jokes. If we do, this page will be updated first, and the following will apply:
- Google and other ad companies (third-party vendors) will use cookies and similar technologies to show ads based on your previous visits to this site and other sites.
- Google's advertising cookies let Google and its partners show you ads based on those visits.
- You can turn off personalized ads in Google's Ad Settings, and opt out of other vendors' personalized ads at aboutads.info (or youronlinechoices.eu in Europe). You may still see ads that aren't personalized.
- Where the law requires it, such as in the EU and UK, we'll ask for your consent before personalized ads or their cookies are used.
Children
The jokes are kid-friendly, but DabJokes is a site for a general audience and isn't directed at children under 13. We don't knowingly collect personal information from children.
Hosting
DabJokes is hosted on Cloudflare, which processes requests to deliver the site and protect it from abuse. Fonts and images are served from our own domain. Google Analytics, and any future ads, are the only third-party services the site loads.
Changes
If these terms change, the new version will be posted here with a new date at the top.
